Playing Time Policy

The HGBA playing time policy is designed to balance player development, game experience, and competitive team play. The goal is to provide all athletes with meaningful opportunities to improve while preparing players for increased competition as they progress through the program.

HGBA uses a progressive playing time model that evolves with player age and development.

• Even playing time to encourage equal development opportunities for all players
• Emphasis is on:
• Skill development
• Game understanding
• Confidence building
• Coaches are expected to provide consistent and meaningful game participation for all players

• Players will receive a minimum 50% of total available playing time
• If you have 8 players, with 20 minute halves, there are 200 total minutes (40 minutes x 5 players) so each player would play a minimum of 25 total minutes
• Emphasis is on:
• Skill development
• Game understanding
• Confidence building
• Coaches are expected to provide consistent and meaningful game participation for all players

• Players will receive a minimum 40% of total playing time
• This level represents a transition toward more competitive play
• Coaches may begin to adjust playing time based on:
• Effort and attitude
• Practice participation
• Commitment to team expectations
• Game performance

• Players will receive a minimum 25% of total playing time
• Increased emphasis on:
• Team competitiveness
• Game strategy and execution
• Playing time will be more influenced by:
• Skill level
• Game situations
• Team needs

• Playing time is evaluated over the course of a tournament not strictly per quarter
• Coaches are expected to make good faith efforts to meet these guidelines
• Substitution patterns may vary based on game flow and competitive situations

While HGBA provides structured guidelines, certain situations may impact playing time:

Coaches may adjust playing time based on:

• Game situations (e.g., end-of-game strategy)
• Player health and safety

These factors are considered part of overall player development and team responsibility.

HGBA recognizes that team levels (A, B, C) may influence how playing time is applied:

• A Teams:
• Greater emphasis on competitive play and game performance
• B/C Teams:
• Greater emphasis on development and balanced participation

Regardless of team level, coaches are expected to align with HGBA’s overall philosophy and guidelines.

• Coaches will communicate expectations for playing time at the start of the season
• Players are encouraged to focus on:
• Effort
• Improvement
• Team contribution
• Parents with questions should follow HGBA’s communication guidelines, starting with the coach at an appropriate time
• When dealing with conflict, the communication plan will include the following steps: 
• First, have a respectful conversation with the coach or coaches of the team
• 24 hour cooling off period will be observed
• Parent/Player should contact the coach via email/text to determine a time to have the conversation
• We look for players in grades 6/7 to first own conversations with coaches before getting parents involved
• Under no circumstances should these conversations take place before, during or after a game or during a tournament
• If the issue is not resolved first with the coach, the next step is a conversation with the Coaching Director

HGBA’s approach reflects a development-to-competition progression:

• Younger grades: Build skills and confidence through consistent play
• Middle grades: Introduce accountability and competition
• Older grades: Prepare players for high school basketball through competitive experience

HGBA’s playing time policy is intended to:

• Support long-term player development
• Promote team success and sportsmanship
• Provide a clear and fair framework for players, coaches, and families
