Hopkins Girls Basketball Association

Program Overview

We work to keep our program one of the most affordable programs around and to give an opportunity for everyone to join regardless of financial need. Parent, guardian and volunteer help give us that opportunity.  We are also seeking local business sponsorship again this year.  Full details about the costs of the program can be found on our registration page.

All skill levels are welcome.  HGBA strives to provide opportunity to players who want to participate in our program.  To meet this goal, HGBA may need to create combination teams, but at times cuts are necessary.  The best way to ensure this goal is met is to help keep participant numbers up so that multiple teams can be formed at each grade level.

Player Eligibility

Hopkins Girls Basketball Association is open to all girls in grades 3 through 8 who attend a school in the Hopkins district (this includes schools that are not Hopkins district public schools).

Athletes are allowed to participate with only one MYBA member association or school for the winter community-based youth basketball season.
Athletes must try out and compete with the travel basketball association where they attend school (some exceptions are listed below).
If a travel basketball opportunity through an association, school, community education, or similar does not exist in the area representing the youth athlete’s school attendance area, or if the athlete has been cut or restricted from their home association, they may participate with a bordering association. In this situation, the athlete does not need to complete the Player Transfer process.

Full eligibility details can be found here on the MYAS website.

Coaches

Thank you for your interest in coaching a Hopkins Girls Basketball Association team (HGBA). HGBA is a 501c3 volunteer-run organization and wouldn't exist without volunteers like you!

All coaches interested in volunteering for a HGBA coaching position must complete the Coach Screening Form in full by Sunday, September 3rd, 2023.

HGBA is a member of Trusted Coaches. The Trusted Coaches online training and educational program provides our youth coaches with concussion instruction, a nationwide criminal background check, and certification in the Positive Coaching Alliance Double-Goal Coach® course. Coaches are issued a Trusted Coach Membership Card and placed on the Trusted Coaches National Registry upon completion. If you are selected to coach or assistant coach a team, you will be required to complete the online training at no cost to you.

As a coach, you will be responsible for working with a team of ideally 8-10 players, planning and executing practice plans, and coaching the team during warm-ups and games.   To apply, please fill out the coach application. Our coaching director will be interviewing coaching applicants and selecting coaches and assistants for each team formed.

To receive full consideration to coach with the Hopkins Girls Basketball Association (HGBA) you will need to:

  1. Complete the online Coach Screening Form.
  2. Lead drills during Pre-Eval Clinics (Sept. 7 and 14th)
  3. Complete an interview.*
  4. Attend coaches clinic and coaching meetings offered by HGBA.  Dates and times will be communicated via email to the email address listed on your account.
  5. Complete the online Trusted Coaches training prior to October 15th, which includes a criminal background check.

*Priority will be given to those who coached at the 4th grade level or higher last year.

Due to coaching shortages and aligned with other associations, HGBA will pursue coaches for teams playing at the A or B-level in 6th-8th grade.  Athletes who make these teams will now pay a $50 coaching fee to offset coaching costs.  If a paid coach is unable to be secured, parent volunteer coaches will be utilized and no coaching fee assessed.

Next Steps:

Our coaching director, Ana Garcia, will be in contact with coaching candidates to schedule an interview once the Coach Screening form is completed.  Interviews will be conducted via Phone, Zoom or In-Person dependent upon availability.

Coaching decisions and offers will be made following team formation.

All coaches interested in volunteering for a HGBA coaching position must complete this application in full by Sunday, September 3rd, 2023.

COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct a pre-season parent meeting during the first few weeks of your practice season.
  • Communicate with your team manager and parents regarding practice updates and information, tourney logistics, and HGBA events.
  • Plan and be prepared for each practice.
  • Practices should be split between skill development and game development. The amount of each will be dependent on the grade level, time of the season, and the skill level of each player/team.  HGBA will provide guidance on this.
  • We want to help the girls learn the game of basketball and HGBA believes in utilizing a motion offense. Use this as a foundation.
  • Be punctual to each practice and game, allowing time to meet before warm-ups begin.
  • Know the rules of the sport and each tournament and abide by them.
  • Instruct team members in the rules of the game and motivate each player to compete according to the rules at all times.
  • Meet with your team immediately following each game of a tournament to reflect.

3rd Grade Program

For the 2023-20234season, we are excited to offer an opportunity for 3rd graders to play on an HGBA 3rd grade team.  This developmental program will allow for 3rd graders to engage with HGBA, focusing on the fundamentals of basketball in a fun environment while also gaining valuable game experience.

New this year, HGBA will participate in the MYAS 3rd Grade Program. This includes 5 tournaments, played on Saturdays, starting in Dec. This new program ensures competition will be 3rd grade only, and limits the amount of travel for our youngest athletes.
